Media Landscapes

  • Union Center for the Arts 120 Judge John Aiso Street Los Angeles, CA, 90012 United States (map)

Eugene Moon, a “Media Landscapes” exhibitor performed, with an instrument he built himself, based on his studies in ethnomusicology. In a riveting performance, Moon's piece transported the audience, "...inspired by traditional Asian musical structures of starting slow then fast, like a stream becoming a waterfall", as Moon described. •

Matthew Clough-Hunter and Tahee Kim developed a piece specially made for the event, a thrilling deconstruction of The Ronette's song, "Be My Baby". Kim made her part of the piece in response to Clough-Hunter's painting, that deconstructs and visualizes the structure of songs on the Billboard Top 100 from 1963-4 of which "Be My Baby" was a part of. In Taehee's piece, she worked with an Arduino sensor and MaxMPS software to construct a touch-sensitive painting using semi-conductive thread. When one touches the thread with a metal object, it activates a portion of the song. Each portion was distinguished by the song's chorus, intro, ending, and verse, and corresponded to individual threads. Matthew added to this piece with an array of synthesizer-based sounds. In all, the piece captured a piece of Americana shot through the filters of science fiction, Do-It-Yourself devices rigged to capture radio signals, and lifestyles of remote regions of the United States.
